Lighter Notes... November 2014

What started as the ideal source for exit signs, LED lighting has grown to be a contender in almost every category.   LED lighting is now proving to be an alternative to linear fluorescent lighting, which has reached its maximum potential.

There are currently three types of LED retrofit linear lamps that install three different ways. Each option has its own advantages and disadvantages as outlined by a white paper published by GE.
  • Type A: LED Tube with Integrated Driver - Compatible and Operated on Existing LFL Ballast
  • Type B: LED Tube with Integrated Driver - Wired to Mains
  • Type C: LED Tube with Remote Driver
Installation cost, dimming capabilities, and system efficacy are just a few of the points that should be considered when choosing an LED linear lamp. GE developed Type A and Type C LED linear lamps that operate on existing ballasts or a remote driver.   GE does not anticipate producing Type B lamps that utilize line voltage to the sockets, which actually creates a safety hazard.
To make it easy for building and facility managers to choose the best fit for their building, GE designed an LED at-a-glance matrix highlighting each type of LED linear solution:

MC-LED™ Lighting Cable

Encore Wire’s MC-LED Cable is a convenient, cost effective cable that connects
building automation and light control solutions to create smart control technology utilized in a variety of energy management systems to reduce the waste of electrical energy.

MC-LED Cable not only has the same components of standard MC, but also includes the Class 2 or 3 circuits and is installed as a single cost-saving package.

Applications:
Type MC-LED cable is designed for use with LED and Fluorescent dimming systems and smart building technology that offers optimal control over the building’s lighting systems.

MC-LED may be surface mounted, fished and/or embedded in plaster in normally dry locations. MC-LED eliminates the need to install a separate low-voltage cable and traditional lighting/power MC Cable to a single luminaire. UL Classified for 1, 2 and 3 hour through penetrations (Fire-Stop).

Class 2 and 3 Conductors:
Color-coded (pink/gray) 16 AWG twisted jacketed pair with 600V insulation. NEC Section 300.3(C)(1) permits conductors of circuits rated 1000 volts or less to occupy the same cable provided all conductors are rated for the maximum circuit voltage in the cable.

MC-LED is available in 12/2, 10/2 and 12/3 solid and 12/2 stranded, 250ft roll per each.
